The following is from the Milwaukee Journal
A 32-year-old Milwaukee woman was charged Tuesday with drunken driving and recklessly endangering safety after crashing her SUV while transporting 10 children.
Akira S. Kirk of Milwaukee admitted drinking a 24-ounce can of beer before the rollover crash at the 10th St. exit ramp from northbound I-43, according to a criminal complaint. Kirk was charged with operating while intoxicated first offense with a minor child in the vehicle, operating with prohibited alcohol concentration first offense with a minor child in the vehicle and three counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety.
Kirk was driving with 10 children between ages 2 and 18 in the 2003 Dodge Durango when she crashed Saturday afternoon, according to the Milwaukee County sheriff's office.
Before the crash, Kirk said, she had been traveling at 45 to 50 mph. Distracted by the children, she turned around to the back seat to stop the fighting, the complaint says. At that point, Kirk said, she lost control and hit a wall. The vehicle flipped, landing on the roof.
When a Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy arrived at the scene, Kirk was walking around the Durango, according to the complaint. She repeatedly said, "I'm drunk, arrest me. I hurt my babies." Two of the youngest children had been sitting on the laps of two older children, sharing seat belts, according to the deputy sheriff. Five of the children were injured, according to the sheriff's office.
Kirk failed a field sobriety test, according to the complaint, and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.16, twice the legal limit of intoxication.
